DAB Surround: 5.1 Surround Sound for Digital Radio
RockAntenne is the worldwide first radio station to broadcast a DAB Surround signal. Together with Fraunhofer IIS, RockAntenne presents at IFA this stunning new radio experience. DAB Surround brings the concert hall into your living room: Radio listening becomes an immersive experience literally surrounding the listener with a live concert atmosphere. To achieve this, DAB Surround does not need more data rate than a stereo DAB transmission. All legacy devices play back the program in the usual DAB stereo quality; future DAB Surround devices will play back the same signal in high-quality 5.1 surround sound. This allows broadcast stations to avoid expensive simulcast transmissions. Furthermore, broadcasters can integrate DAB Surround easily and cost efficiently into the existing broadcast chain. This is even possible for programs which so far do not broadcast 5.1 content or want to mix stereo and 5.1 material. SX Pro®by Fraunhofer IIS analyzes and processes the stereo audio signal to harmonically integrate it into a 5.1 transmission. That way, the advantages of 5.1 surround sound do also apply for stereo music
