La nuova versione del client open source per l'accesso ai contenuti multimediali di Miro, piattaforma di Internet TV peer-to-peer, integra nuove funzionalità rivolte all'audio podcasting. Miro 2.0 è allo stesso tempo un aggregatore di feed RSS, un client per Bit Torrent e un mediaplayer per Windows, Macintosh e Linux. Miro ha anche una sua Miro Guide in cui vengono pubblicati i contenuti disponibili in un formato video podcasting, in un modello che ricorda progetti come Joost, Babelgum e il progetto che oggi va per la maggiore, Hulu. Interamente open source, il codice viene sviluppato da una comunità guidata da una fondazione no profit. Ho qualche dubbio sui fondamenti utilizzati, perché il codice Windows di Miro si serve di parti di VLC per il suo player, mentre la versione Macintosh è costruita su Quicktime. Il risultato è che la parte audio non è per esempio compatibile con i flussi Real Audio. C'è ancora molta strada da fare sul percorso evolutivo dei mediaplayer che integrano funzioni di aggregazione di contenuti esterni (e magari di produzione di flussi in uscita). Ma inevitabilmente questi software cresceranno e il ruolo dell'open source sarà molto importante.
Miro 2 has an all-new interface and lots of new features– but for me it’s less of a collection of new stuff and more of a rethinking of the whole Miro experience. I’m really proud of what we’ve built and I think it will definitely advance our mission to spread open video to more people.
In a nutshell, here’s what’s new:

- Miro is now faster, more responsive, and uses less memory
- You can add streaming sites like Hulu to your sidebar (note: streaming with Flash only works in Windows and OSX)
- You can add download sites like Archive.org or legaltorrents.com to your sidebar and download to Miro with a single click
- Improved playlists
- New compact, sortable list view
- Better audio support
…and a few days ago we launched the all-new Miro Guide that looks beautiful and works with Miro 2.0 (for example, the Guide is now starting to list some streaming sites).
