S.Korea installs speakers

SEOUL - SOUTH Korea on Tuesday started installing loudspeakers along its tense border with North Korea in preparation for broadcasts, ignoring threats by the communist state's army to fire at them.
After a six-year halt, the Seoul government has resumed a Cold War-style propaganda campaign as part of a package of reprisals for the North's sinking of a South Korean warship.
The campaign began on Monday evening, hours after President Lee Myung Bak cut trade links with the North and announced he would refer it to the United Nations Security Council for punishment. The defence ministry said it resumed broadcasts on FM radio at 6pm on Monday, starting with a four-hour programme entitled 'Voice of Freedom'. It was being aired three times a day, a spokesman told AFP.
It included Mr Lee's speech, messages on freedom and democracy from a military anchorman, a song from a South Korean girl band extolling freedom of choice, and pointed comments on how obesity rather than hunger is a problem in the South. The North suffers persistent severe food shortages. The UN Children's Fund estimates one in three of its children suffer from malnutrition.
The ministry said the programme would later be beamed through high-performance loudspeaker batteries to be set up along the southern edge of the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) which bisects the peninsula. 'Initially we are installing loudspeakers at 14 places along the DMZ. The installation requires several months of work,' the spokesman said.
The ministry will also install 11 giant electronic signboards along the border and later send leaflets into the North by balloon. These would detail the results of a probe into the warship sinking, among other topics. A multinational investigation concluded last week that a North Korean submarine sank the Cheonan in March 26 with the loss of 46 lives.

North Korea to fire at South's border loudspeakers

SEOUL: North Korea’s military threatened today to open fire on any South Korean loudspeakers which start broadcasting cross-border propaganda as tensions flared over the sinking of a South Korean warship.
Seoul earlier in the day announced a package of reprisals after an official investigation concluded last week that the North had sunk the ship with a torpedo on March 26.
Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young said the broadcasts, suspended since 2004, would be resumed across the tense land border. The North has denied involvement in the sinking which cost 46 lives and threatened “all-out war” in response to any punitive measures.
Its military said in a statement a propaganda slogan had already appeared on the other side of the border, and the South’s military was moving to set up the loudspeakers.
“This is an open breach of the inter-Korean military agreement, a grave military provocation...and a serious incident driving inter-Korean relations to the worst phase,” the military said in a statement on the official news agency. Seoul’s defence ministry could not confirm whether slogans were being displayed, but said the military has resumed propaganda broadcasts on FM radio.
Rodong Sinmun newspaper accused the South’s government of making fictitious allegations of a torpedo attack to distract attention from its domestic unpopularity.

Interassante post.

Approdondiremo!
