Sorpresa. Adesso Sirius XM guadagna

Satellite radio giant turns a first-quarter profit, but what happens when auto sales level off?

Sirius XM Radio ( SIRI - news - people ) swung to a profit in the first quarter thanks to rising auto sales that pushed up its subscriber base. Analysts say the company remains on solid footing as long as car sales are on an upward trend, hardly a guarantee.
The satellite radio company reported a first-quarter income of $41.6 million, or 1 cent per share, compared with a loss of $238.8 million or 7 cents, last year. Analysts expected the company to break even. Sales rose 11% to $670.6 million in the first-quarter.
Sirius XM Radio broadened its subscriber base by 171,441 customers in the first quarter and maintained its guidance that calls for 500,000 new subscribers in 2010.
"The continuing recovery of the automotive sector and expanding signs of increased consumer spending are encouraging signs for the company's growth prospects,” said Mel Karmazin, the company's CEO.
The improving outlook did little to boost shares on a day when the broader market was reeling over European debt worries, and Sirius shares dropped 4% to $1.18. Shares have been on the mend in general, though, rallying more than 90% since the beginning of 2010 as the U.S. economy recovers. Investors have also overcome fears of a potential bankruptcy after Liberty Media Corp ( LCAPA - news - people ) pumped cash in the overly levered company at the beginning of last year.
Sirius has an almost symbiotic relationship with the auto industry, thriving when more cars are sold since its service is frequently offered as a free trial to buyers. The company managed to retire some of its debt in the first quarter...
