Il portavoce di Worldspace Italia, l'amico Marzio Brusini, mi ha chiamato per farmi una utile precisazione riguardante la notizia sul prolungamento dei servizi europei dal satellite AfriStar, che in teoria avrebbero dovuto essere sospesi a partire da questo dicembre in preparazione del lancio dei servizi di radio satellitare digitale sul territorio italiano. Sul sito francese di Worldspace Europe era apparso invece l'annuncio di un prolungamento della possibilità di continuare ad ascoltare una parte dei canali trasmessi. Marzio mi ha segnalato che un nuovo comunicato ufficiale (che riporto qui) è da poco stato pubblicato sul sito Worldspace.com. Nel testo si fa riferimento a una lista di programmi che proseguono in effetti il loro servizio e verranno diffusi gratuitamente in forma non criptata. Contrariamente a quello che era stato detto sui forum di discussione citati nel precedente post, questa estensione non sarebbe legata a presunti ritardi nel lancio del servizio per l'Italia, ma alle diverse modalità con cui Worldspace sta testando il passaggio alle nuove codifiche audio, che lascerebbero posto a un certo numero di canali ancora attivi dal transponder nord-occidentale. Marzio mi conferma che per Worldspace Italia non ci sono "ritardi", l'avvio dell'offerta commerciale resta prevista per la fine del 2008.
Service Update for customers located in the coverage area of the Northwest beam of our AfriStarTM satellite (Northwestern Africa and Europe).
Dear WorldSpace Customer:
In May of 2007, we informed you that your current subscription service on the AfriStarTM Northwest beam would no longer be available, effective 1 December 2007, due to testing in preparation for the start of our European mobile service. The European service requires extensive testing because it employs a new technology standard that was recently adopted by the European Union. This new standard will require WorldSpace to alter its core equipment technology in order for its receivers to be compliant.
On 3 December 2007, we will indeed begin our testing and countries located in our Northwest beam coverage area will no longer be able to receive full service. As you know, we have not been taking any new orders for the past six or so months.
However, now that our testing plan is more refined, WorldSpace is pleased to inform you that we are able to continue offering a variety of programming – free of charge and without encryption – to customers with existing ‘legacy’ radio receivers.
These channels may still be used for testing from time-to-time so we cannot assure the quality or service and the 100% availability of the channel line-up nor can we state at this time how long we will be able to maintain the availability of these channels.

WorldSpace anticipates launching Europe’s first mobile satellite digital radio and data service in late 2008 – first in Italy – using the Northwest beam of the AfriStar satellite. At the service’s maturity, customers for the Italian service can expect to receive approximately 40 to 50 channels of programming. The introduction of the new WorldSpace mobile service in late-2008 will begin with Italy and will integrate the ETSI European standard into its satellite radio equipment as required. Only receivers that comply with this standard will be able to receive the new WorldSpace mobile service in Italy and other countries within the Northwest beam of the WorldSpace AfriStar satellite.
