Day 1: 3 March 2011

10.00
Session 1: Re-use, recycle, re-broadcast

11.30
Session 2: Journalism and the crowd

14.00
Session 3: Bells, whistles and brands

16.00
Session 4: New homes for radio (radio e dispositivi non-radiofonici)

Day 2: 4 March 2011

09.30
Session 5: Meet the audience

10.30
Session 6: New media pitching session

A global ubiquitous multicast service leads to the following:

  • The content owner no longer pays for bandwidth from multiple identical streams;
  • The multicast-enabled ISP no longer carries as much duplicate traffic;
  • The multicast-enabled ISP controls the replication of the content within its network and in the AMT Relay;
  • The unicast-only network absorbs the impact of the unicast streams.

Just wanted to say hello to Mike, MMR10's coordinator, and all the participants to this year's event. Have an excellent meeting and thanks in advance for all your discussions!

EBU Members and Associate Members are invited to attend EBU Radio's flagship multiplatform, multimedia event which thanks to Radio Netherlands Worldwide is taking place in one of Europe's most exciting media venues: the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, in Hilversum, on 18th and 19th March 2010.
The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision is an iconic and bold building that dazzles and grabs the imagination of visitors as they approach Hilversum's Media Park. The rainbow coloured edifice was inaugurated by Queen Beatrix at the end of 2006 to keep alive the Netherland's rich and varied contribution to the history of radio and television.
The beacon-like museum is a mash-up of cutting-edge technology, architectural creativity and historic archives. It complements the Media Park, the nerve centre of Dutch broadcasting, which describes itself as the place "where old and new media meet".
There could be no more appropriate epithet or indeed venue for MMR10, which shows how the digital revolution is transforming and reinvigorating the world's first broadcasting medium. MMR, the multiplatform multimedia radio workshop, is the only EBU event that looks at new content, new technologies and new opportunities for interactivity from the point of view of radio.
Special guests from Apple, Audio Boo, CBS Radio and The Guardian, amongst others, will join distinguished speakers from Europe's leading public service media in mini-workshops on social media, widgets and apps, podcasting, streaming and multimedia storytelling. Delegates will have ample opportunity to network with each other and to meet the special guest speakers at a speed dating event.
MMR is an opportunity for learning from the experience of others, for sharing ideas and for forging partnerships. It will highlight many of the challenges and opportunities facing radio today, as well as promoting good practices, stimulating creativity and providing a showcase for original content.

File multimediali in Tv, l'alternativa Magic Cable

opera video-acustica in dieci quadri
Venerdì 27 novembre 2009, ore 18,30

Triennale di Milano, Salone d’Onore (1° piano) – V.le Alemagna 6, Milano

Testi e immagini di Giorgio Riva, musiche di Francesco Rampichini.
Introduce Silvana Annicchiarico, Direttore Triennale Design Museum.

Milano, 23 Novembre 2009.

WIT Software announces Live TV application for iPhone

Coimbra, April 13th 2009: WIT Software unveils iPhone “Live TV” application. It is now possible for Vodafone Portugal iPhone 3G users to watch real time TV. This is one of the first iPhone Live TV applications in the world to be launched commercially in a mobile operator. It was developed by WIT-Software, in close cooperation with Vodafone Portugal,
the first Operator to enable this service on its network.
What makes this application unique, according to Luis Silva, WIT Software CEO, is “the use of mobile standards, commonly used by mobile operators, and the ability to use 3G. With this application, mobile operators do not have to change anything on their network and subscribers can use the service anywhere in the country, as long as they have 3G coverage”.
This application is available for free on the Portuguese AppStore as “Vodafone Mobile TV” and it can be used by any Vodafone Portugal customer. The application is now available for licensing for other mobile operators willing to extend its Mobile TV offering to iPhone 3G subscribers.
Yet another unique feature is “the support for Fast Channel Switching, where the user can do zapping of TV channels in an easy way. This feature brings the Mobile TV experience on the iPhone even closer to the traditional TV set” according to Luis Silva.
WIT Software has developed a competence center for iPhone Application Development, and in a short period this is the third application certified by Apple. The iPhone MMS Client and the Mobile ATM application are also available on the AppStore, also for Vodafone Portugal iPhone 3G customers.

Wish I were there fellas, have a nice and productive meeting!

Microsoft today announced Zune updates, timed to upstage iPod/iTunes announcements anticipated from Apple on Tuesday.
Unfortunately for everybody who owns a portable media player, Microsoft’s announcements are woefully misguided and mistimed.
You have to give Microsoft credit for releasing another Zune update that brings new features to their existing players. Apple typically saves significant new features for the current line of iPods to give people incentive to upgrade.
However, Microsoft’s previous Zune’s updates have not offered enough value to attract many buyers away from the iPod/iTunes ecosystem, and this update doesn’t look like it will either. Microsoft continues to focus on features, like FM tuning, that haven’t proven to be big with buyers.
Even more bizarre, Microsoft cites Clear Channel’s CEO in their announcement for the Zune update:

“Microsoft’s decision to integrate an FM tuner into the Zune was revolutionary and they continue their extraordinary leadership with Buy from FM,” said John Hogan, president and CEO of Clear Channel Radio. “We’ve always known that radio is the primary source for discovering new music, and Microsoft’s decision to marry music discovery and delivery does two things: enables consumers to instantly satisfy their passion and enables FM song tagging to be enjoyed by all radio listeners, everywhere.”

What is Microsoft thinking?
The biggest value of a portable media portable media player is the fact that it frees you from being chained to Clear Channel and mainstream radio!
Seeing Clear Channel featured in Microsoft’s Zune press release suggests that there may be a fundamental gap in Microsoft’s understanding of what motivates people to get and use a portable media player.
If people want to listen to radio, people have them at home, in their car and at work. Putting a radio tuner into a portable media player is a feature that, to most users, is little more than a complication.
This sort of thing is a disappointment; there are a ton of talented people working on the Zune, and having the device marketed as a sort of Clear Channel radio accessory is a real mistake.
Microsoft has demonstrated that it has the might to compete with Apple in the world of portable media players, but not the vision. This is a loss for Zune owners, iPod owners and the entire portable media player market.

Microsoft Zune: ascolta in FM, acquista su Wi-Fi

Zune Takes Music Discovery to the Next Level With New Ways to Find and Access Digital Music

Software update will enable Zune users to tag songs and buy music directly from FM radio and download and stream music on the go beginning Sept. 16.

REDMOND, Wash. — Sept. 8, 2008 — Zune, Microsoft Corp.’s end-to-end music and entertainment service, again revolutionizes how customers discover and connect to the music they love, where and how they want it. Starting next week, every Zune portable media player will let consumers wirelessly download or stream millions of songs on the go from thousands of wireless hot spots around the country. Free, powerful software and firmware updates will give Zune owners the ability to discover, tag and purchase songs directly from the built-in FM radio, wirelessly access the Zune Marketplace store on the go, and tap into interactive, personalized music recommendations that add even more value to the Zune Pass subscription. Zune is also expanding its device lineup with new 16GB and 120GB capacities as well as shiny new blue-on-silver and sleek all-black color schemes. The new features will begin rolling out on Sept. 16, 2008.
“Digital music services really come alive when they help people find not only the music they know they like, but the music they didn’t know they would love,” said Chris Stephenson, general manager of Global Marketing for Zune at Microsoft. “With the combination of subscription, wireless access to millions of tracks, and powerful discovery features like personal recommendations and the ability to buy music from FM radio, Zune is taking the digital music experience to the next level.”

Wireless Connections

More than 61 percent of people say they discover new music by listening to the radio. (1) With that in mind, Zune is taking advantage of the wireless connection and the built-in FM tuner to deliver a new feature called Buy from FM, which lets customers tag and purchase songs they hear on FM radio stations (2) directly from the Zune device. When the customer is in a Wi-Fi hot spot, the song can be immediately downloaded to the Zune device. If Wi-Fi is not available, the device will have a queue of songs ready to download when connected to a home computer or in a hot spot. Buy from FM uses Radio Data System and RT+ data feeds within the FM broadcast frequencies that identify song and artist data and enable the Zune service to identify and deliver the track to the customer.
In addition, users can now access the Zune Marketplace music store directly from their device when they are in a recognized Wi-Fi hot spot, or through a home wireless network. To make it easy to discover music on the go, customers can browse lists of featured new releases and top songs and albums sorted by genre, or use the on-screen keypad to type in the song of their choice. Once they have picked a track or album, they can either download it or stream it directly to the Zune device.
Zune customers have a choice in how they acquire music: They can pay per track or choose a Zune Pass subscription. Zune Pass subscribers can download or stream music to the device or their computer interchangeably, all for a flat rate of $14.99 per month. So whether a device has 4 GB or 120 GB of storage, Zune Pass customers can access and stream millions of songs directly to their Zune.

More Ways to Discover Music: Channels and Picks

The new Zune software update taps expert sources, recommendations from the Zune service and online music community, and the user’s own play data to create a dynamic, digital music experience where discovering music is easy and seamless.

• Channels. Channels are an exciting new tool for music discovery. Customers can explore channels programmed by experts from the music industry such as the Billboard Top 100, The FADER magazine and KEXP radio, in addition to workout-themed channels tailored for high, medium and low impact, and top chart channels from all genres and subgenres. The powerful Zune software will even create custom channels for each user, based on favorite artists and genres. Channels are included with a monthly Zune Pass subscription and can be synced to the device for playback on the go. For non-Zune Pass subscribers, the Channels are available for a la carte purchase.
• Personal Picks. Now the Zune software learns what kind of music users like and makes personal recommendations. When users log onto Zune Marketplace, they’ll find a new area called Picks where the Zune recommendation algorithm will suggest artists, albums and tracks based on the music they have been listening to, as well as channels they might like and listeners like them in the Zune Social.
• The Zune Social online music community. Customers can connect with millions of like-minded fans and share music via the Zune Card, a real-time playlist of each user’s favorite and recently played tracks that can be accessed on the Web or within the Zune software, or synced to the Zune device. Zune Pass subscribers can play full tracks from Zune Cards synced to their device while on the go, and now the playlists will even automatically update with the most recently played tracks when Zune connects to a wireless hot spot. It’s like subscribing to a free feed of music from the sources people trust most — their friends.

Powerful Software

The Zune PC software is a free download at http://www.zune.net that provides rich discovery and media management capabilities to help consumers make the most of their existing music collections, in addition to providing access to the Zune Social and Zune Marketplace so they can add to it.

• Mixview. Customers can select an artist, album or Zune Card to activate a dynamic, visual mosaic of related music and listeners. With each click users can take the view in a new direction, creating a fun, graphical way to discover new music. Mixview works with users’ current collection of music, in addition to tracks and albums from across the Zune Marketplace.
• Now Playing. The improved Now Playing view is more interactive and cinematic. Users can sit back and enjoy the combination of great artist imagery, colorful effects, bio information and data from the Zune online music community, all combined in a full-screen view. They can also click to dive deeper into the music behind the picture, providing another great way to interact with their collection.

A new firmware update will also improve the experience on the Zune device. In addition to the new wireless functionality, Zune will bring new features customers have been asking for:

• Games on the go. Two free games, “Hexic” and “Texas Hold ’Em,” will keep users entertained on the go.
• Audiobooks. All Zune devices will feature support for audiobooks this fall from industry leaders in the digital distribution of audiobook content.
• Audible. Customers can visit audible.com to download and sync favorite books from the 50,000 titles available from over 600 publishers and content providers.
• OverDrive. They can download content from sites powered by overdrive.com, including 7,500 libraries’ Web sites worldwide. (http://search.overdrive.com)

There is now a webpage where you can listen each of the stations and at the same time see the slides being broadcast on the IRiver receiver which is an interesting looking set, you can hold it in the palm of your hand, been listening to Capital and watching the slides go through, the screen does occasionally go blank. Certainly for Londoners the travel information it is putting up is a useful adjunct to the radio service. To me there's not much comparison with television as the slides are just supplementing what is being broadcast, i.e. you are listening to a piece of music and the latest weather and travel information etc is just coming through on the screen in front of you. See the service for yourselves at:

http://85.159.184.112/for/

And a further report from Radio Today:

Even though we were in the basement of a London address, the signal was still quite impressive and let us view various images from one of the trail stations, Capital Radio.

http://www.radiotoday.co.uk/news.php?extend.1549.2
