BBC iPlayer 2, integrazione totale di radio e tv

E' ormai in dirittura di lancio la versione beta del nuovo iPlayer della BBC, ll browser/gateway per l'accesso on demand dei contenuti dell'emittente pubblica britannica. La prima versione era stata resa disponibile lo scorso Natale. La principale novità è la totale unificazione dell'offerta radiotelevisiva. Cercare alla voce "comedy" consentirà dunque di richiamare le sitcom televisive e gli spettacoli leggeri radiofonici. Notevole miglioramento anche per la qualità dell'immagine (ora larga 640 pixel) e dei codec audio, per favorire l'ascolto della musica classica di BBC Radio 3. Il nuovo iPlayer incorpora informazioni RSS per la creazione di mashup con gli altri contenuti della BBC e prevede la possibilità di accedere all'intera griglia di programmazione, con la chiara indicazione di quali contenuti sono disponibili su iPlayer e quali no. Last but not least, iPlayer è disponibile per iPhone e iPod Touch, otlre che per Nintendo Wii.
Un approfondimento con intervista al responsabile del prodotto, Anthony Rose (qui riporto il suo intervento nel blog di iPlayer) appare oggi sul Guardian. Rose riferisce che iPlayer ha già avuto un impatto misurabile sulle abitudini di ascolto delle generazioni più giovani. Uno spettacolo per adulti come la celebre serie Eastenders viene vista solo al 2% con iPlayer, mentre altri programmi giovanili vantano soglie di audience del 30 o 40%!

BBC iPlayer launched officially on Christmas Day.
First, in January, we "pimped up" the iPlayer site by adding Most Popular, Just In, Last Chance and More Like This zones.
In February, we made iPlayer available on Apple iPhone. Then, in March, we made iPlayer available on Nintendo Wii.
So... what's next? It's time to let the cat out of the bag and tell you about the next big thing that we're working on: an all-new iPlayer website.
The existing iPlayer website works really well, and has proven hugely successful. However, in Internet Land nothing stays still for long and the iPlayer site that you see now is based on a somewhat inflexible static-page-rendering platform that's now over a year old.
That technology platform has proven robust and reliable, but we've pushed it to the limit in terms of features that we can add using the existing site architecture. It's now time to move onto an all-new dynamic-page-rendering architecture which will give us with a platform that can provide a personalised TV and radio experience, can adapt itself to different display sizes - and a whole lot more.
But enough preamble: here's a sneak preview of BBC iPlayer 2.0. which will be launching as a beta very soon.
First up, we think it's gorgeous - thanks to the brilliant work of our in-house User Experience & Design (UXD) team - with a visual theme that matches the new bbc.co.uk site "house style":
The most important change is that we combined TV and Radio in the same iPlayer interface, which means that you when you go to, say, Comedy, you'll find your favourite TV and radio comedy programmes all in the same page.
I'll say immediately that combining TV and radio in the same interface was a much-debated design decision.
One of the attractions of the current iPlayer site is that it's brilliantly simple, and we don't want to lose that simplicity. However, we felt that if we could provide a way to let you find your favourite TV and radio programmes in one place, that would be a major win.
But, for those who want to see TV only, or Radio only, you can easily do that by clicking the "TV", "Radio" or "TV and Radio" links.
Of course, you can also go directly to your favourite TV channel or national radio network:
Next, the first of many personalisation additions that we'll be adding over the coming months: the iPlayer site will now remember which programmes you last played and where you got up to in each programme.
If you don't have time to finish a programme, no problem: when you next go back to the iPlayer site, it will be right there on the homepage, ready to resume from where you last left off with just a single click.
Not only will iPlayer remember which shows you've recently played, but when new episodes of those programmes become available they'll automatically show up in the Last Played widget for you. So, if you're a Torchwood fan, when you come back next week, your new Torchwood episode should be ready for you to play directly from the homepage.
As people begin using iPlayer more, it's clear that they're deciding to not watch programmes on TV, expecting to be able to watch them on iPlayer later. But how do you know if a programme will be available in iPlayer?
One of our most common feature requests is for an indication of whether a given programme is scheduled to appear in iPlayer or not, so we have provided a full schedule view that shows all programmes that were on TV and radio, with an indication of which are available for viewing in iPlayer now, which are coming soon, and which (usually for content licensing reasons) are not scheduled for iPlayer.
And, for those who want to use iPlayer to catch up on last night's TV - a common use case - we made that easier with a dedicated widget on the homepage:
One thing conspicuously missing from the current iPlayer site is the provision of RSS feeds. For those who want to consume our content via their RSS reader, or who want to create mashups of the iPlayer site - good news - every page has an RSS feed.
You can even subscribe to a feed of an arbitrary search query, allowing you to use third party feed readers to alert you when your favourite programmes arrive.
Finally (we kept the best bit for last), we're making huge improvements to the quality of both TV and radio within iPlayer.
For TV, we have an all-new playback experience with a larger playback window (640 pixels wide, up from the previous 512 pixels - that's a 25% size increase), and a new More Like This widget at the bottom of the page (now also available in full-screen mode!) which will form a key element in our personalisation roadmap over the coming months.
For radio, we're starting to making huge improvements to the radio quality. Elsewhere in this blog you'll have seen some discussion of the changes to streaming radio online; watch out for a post from Mark Friend (from BBC Audio & Music) soon with the full details, but as a listener to BBC Radio 3, let's just say I'm particularly pleased with the changes... ;)
And if you're an existing iPlayer For Radio user, you'll spot an all-new popup radio console - a sleek new design with a built-in More Like This widget which will, in due course, grow to provide you with your own personalised radio station.
As you can guess, we've got a huge amount of work to do to pull this all together. iPlayer gets five million page views per day now, which we think will double when we add radio, and then double again over the next few months, so our plan is to "dual run" the new site alongside the old for a few weeks while we make sure the server can handle the load, listen to and act on your feedback, iron out bugs, etc.
Many of the iPlayer 2.0 enhancements are based on user testing and your feedback. We love to get ideas and comments, so let me know which things you'd like to see that haven't made it into our iPlayer 2.0 release and - who knows - they may show up in a future site update.

BBC, la tv pubblica tra non linearità e IPTV per tutti

Com'era da attendersi, è molto corposa la documentazione trasmessa dalla BBC all'OFCOM in occasione del dibattito sul futuro del servizio pubblico britannico, la cui riforma è prevista in questo periodo.
Ne trovo notizia sul BBC Internet blog, che fornisce un grafico molto eloquente relativo al diverso modo di consumare la televisione introdotto con il lettore multimediale iPlayer. Rispetto al consumo tradizionale, puramente lineare, in cui lo spettatore accende la tv (o la radio) e si sintonizza sulla stazione preferita facendo un semplice zapping, il consumo via iPlayer è assai più diversificato. Il grafico indica chiaramente che chi accende la tv guarda soprattutto il primo e il secondo canale. Passando per iPlayer, invece, le informazioni di contorno e le guide ai programmi determinano scelte meno uniformi e il consumo del terzo e quarto canale diventa molto più consistente (anche se sempre minoritario). E' presumibile che tutto questo discorso valga anche per la radio.

Uno dei discorsi sviluppati nei documenti della Beeb è la proposta di uno standard interoperabile che consenta la distribuzione dei contenuti della IPTV su tutti i televisori di casa e non più nello spazio esclusivo dei giardini cintati eretti dalle Telco con i loro decoder proprietari. L'idea, in pieno stile network neutrality, è di creare una piattaforma unica per mettere a fattor comune l'offerta di iPlayer, 4OD, ITV.Com e Kangaroo e consentire a chi costruisce televisori la possibilità di integrare negli apparecchi una unica interfaccia verso questi contenuti. E' in pratica lo stesso concetto della sintonia che eravamo abituati ad applicare nel nostro rapporto con la tv via etere o satellite, solo che questa volta la sintonia riguarderebbe i flussi della IPTV, senza più barriere determinate dall'uso di decoder incompatibili tra loro. BBC in discussion to set IPTV standard

The BBC is in talks with other public service broadcasters to agree a standard technology that would make IPTV content available on traditional television sets.
BBC director general Mark Thompson said today that they are working on a "simple, open standard" which would massively open up the value of on-demand services like BBC iPlayer and 4oD.
In the BBC's proposal to Ofcom, published this afternoon, he said: "There is an opportunity for the BBC and other PSBs to work with ISPs and the wider industry to set a simple, open standard to deliver internet television to TV sets.
"IPTV could play an important part in delivering the ultimate goal of universal broadband access, with all of the wider consumer and citizen benefits that would bring."
The standard would be jointly developed by the BBC and other PSBs, for use by television manufacturers, and the brand would be jointly owned by all the PSBs as equal partners.
Thompson added at a press conference that the standard would be about making sure that high-quality content on services like BBC iPlayer, 4oD, ITV.com, Kangaroo "is available not only in the IPTV space but on every TV in the house.
"The idea of a simple, open standard which can be built by lots of different service providers…we think will be a good idea for licence fee payers and the whole sector," he said.

Mashed - it's all over

That's it, another year, another massive event at Alexandra Palace. I spent yesterday mainly sleeping, one and half hours sleep is not conducive to maximum brain power - and may explain why I genuinely jumped out of my skin when the explosion (which I had organised) went off just three feet behind me during the presentations.
It's fair to say that I'm really happy with the way things went - I have some thoughts about how we can make it better next year - but by a long way the feedback we've been getting is extremely positive. The Guardian spent all weekend there, and blogged like crazy over at PDA, Ewan Spence wrote a nice piece about it over at BBC News and the O'Reilly GMT guys went video crazy.
Alan Connor from the BBC Internet blog has put together a pageflakes page - well worth a look. The photos are all over on flickr - tagged mashed08 - just over 1000 at last count
The thing that's made it worthwhile for me though is the quality of the hacks that were presented on the Sunday afternoon - we had just under 50 in total - and I can honestly say there wasn't one I thought was a bit lame, and I know the judges felt the same.

APRS, come funziona il nuovo D710 con Avmap

In margine alla notizia sulla cartografia digitale per il sistema Kenwood D710 APRS, in attesa della presentazione dei prossimi giorni alla HamFest di Friedrichshafen, Livio Tarallo mi manda il link a una demo su YouTube. Un filmato di una decina di minuti, realizzato dal radioamatore americano K6GPS Richard McGuire, con tutte le funzionalità e il tracking in tempo reale di un altro radioamatore in contatto tramite i "digipeater" del sistema. Buona visione.

Telefonini: Symbian va verso l'open source

Ieri ho ricevuto l'invito a partecipare a un Webcast di una conferenza stampa Nokia a Londra. Visto che qui gli annunci della conferenza sembrano essere passata sotto silenzio sui giornali (tranne che su Punto Informatico), mi sa che è opportuno darne notizia qui. Oltretutto riguarda il mondo dei cellulari, che come sapete sono diventati candidati sempre più autorevoli come vettori di soluzioni di radio analogica e digitale. Symbian, il sistema operativo per gli smartphone, apre all'Open Source. Il meccanismo dell'operazione, che partirà nel 2009, prevede che Nokia rilevi la società Symbian Ltd, la trasformi in Symbian Foundation e rilasci nell'arco di due anni tutto il software in Open Source, con licenza Eclipse. Alla conferenza hanno partecipato diversi costruttori di telefonini, operatori e il fornitore di chipset STMicroelectronics. Symbian cerca di rincorrere il fenomeno Google Android e lo fa, a mio parere, da una posizione di forza, basandosi su una discreta esperienza di mercato (un mercato in cui ovviamente Windows Mobile ha un ruolo molto importante e Apple ha appena "sfondato" con l'iPhone e la sua strategia rivolta ai programmatori).
Che cosa c'è da aspettarsi adesso? L'obiettivo di Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola e soci è quello di creare un ampio ecosistema di sviluppatori indipendenti che potranno entrare nella Symbian Foundation o fornire soluzioni per la nuova piattaforma. I proponenti non nascondo l'intenzione di promuovere anche una maggiore interoperabilità tra gli apparati e le applicazioni.

Mobile leaders to unify the Symbian software platform and set the future of mobile free Foundation to be established to provide royalty-free open platform and accelerate innovation

LONDON, UK; June 24, 2008 -- Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and NTT DOCOMO announced today their intent to unite Symbian OS, S60, UIQ and MOAP(S) to create one open mobile software platform. Together with AT&T, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, STMicroelectronics, Texas Instruments and Vodafone they plan to establish the Symbian Foundation to extend the appeal of this unified software platform. Membership of this non-profit Foundation will be open to all organizations. This initiative is supported by current shareholders and management of Symbian Limited, who have been actively involved in its development. Plans for the Foundation have already received wide support from other industry leaders.
To enable the Foundation, Nokia today announced plans to acquire the remaining shares of Symbian Limited that Nokia does not already own and then contribute the Symbian and S60 software to the Foundation. Sony Ericsson and Motorola today announced their intention to contribute technology from UIQ and DOCOMO has also indicated its willingness to contribute its MOAP(S) assets. From these contributions, the Foundation will provide a unified platform with common UI framework. A full platform will be available for all Foundation members under a royalty-free license, from the Foundation’s first day of operations.
Contributions from Foundation members through open collaboration will be integrated to further enhance the platform. The Foundation will make selected components available as open source at launch. It will then work to establish the most complete mobile software offering available in open source. This will be made available over the next two years and is intended to be released under Eclipse Public License (EPL) 1.0.
The Foundation’s platform will build on the leading open mobile software platform, with more than 200 million phones, across 235 models, already shipped by multiple vendors and tens of thousands of third-party applications already available for Symbian OS-based devices.
“Ten years ago, Symbian was established by far sighted players to offer an advanced open operating system and software skills to the whole mobile industry”, said Nigel Clifford, CEO of Symbian. “Our vision is to become the most widely used software platform on the planet and indeed today Symbian OS leads its market by any measure. Today's announcement is a bold new step to achieve that vision by embracing a complete and proven platform, offered in an open way, designed to stimulate innovation which is at the heart of everything we do.”

The combined platform is already one of the most advanced and widely used mobile platforms, making it highly attractive for all ecosystem partners, including developers, mobile operators, content and service providers and device manufacturers.
The Foundation is expected to start operating during the first half of 2009, subject to the closing of the acquisition of Symbian Ltd by Nokia.

America Latina, violenza e morte intorno alle radio

Per quanto forti potessero essere le opinioni espresse in radio da Raúl Rodríguez Coronel, la reazione mi sembra un po' eccessiva. Il giornalista e responsabile dei notiziari di Radio Sucre di Guayaquil, in Ecuador, è stato ammazzato con cinque colpi di pistola. La stazione ha messo una taglia di 5 mila dollari per qualunque informazione utile.
Ieri leggevo il reportage di Reporter Sans Frontières sull'attentato dinamitardo a Radio Kollasuyo, a Potosì in Bolivia, durante gli scontri avvenuti nel distretto minerario boliviano. Sono tutti nomi molto familiari di stazioni, ricevibili, oggi o in passato, anche in Europa. E questi fattacci ricordano quanta importanza riesca ancora ad avere il giornalismo radiofonico nelle parti di mondo non ancora dominate completamente dalla televisione.

Sin pistas sobre crimen de periodista de radio Sucre

Desconocidos asesinaron ayer con cinco disparos a Raúl Rodríguez Coronel, periodista y vicepresidente de noticias de radio "Sucre", en Guayaquil.

La víctima recibió los disparos a pocas cuadras de su casa, hasta donde se dirigía, luego de trabajar en el informativo de la radio, para recoger a sus nietos y llevarlos a la escuela. El periodista fue interceptado en la ciudadela Guayacanes, por dos personas que circulaban en un automóvil, y tras los impactos fue trasladado a una clínica, donde falleció.
La Policía aún no tiene pistas sobre el crimen. Sin embargo, por los testimonios y las evidencias recopiladas no se descarta que el hecho haya obedecido a sus opiniones en su espacio de noticias. “Tengo entendido que hoy (ayer) denunció a los homosexuales, algo así”, expresó su hija Alba Rodríguez. El propietario de la emisora, Vicente Arroba, indicó que su compañero de trabajo hacía “declaraciones fuertes” sobre determinados temas. “Estaba en contra del aborto, totalmente contra la delincuencia. Siempre hacía declaraciones fuertes contra los delincuentes”, añadió.

SIP reacciona
La Sociedad Interamericana de Prensa (SIP) condenó ayer el asesinato de Rodríguez e instó a las autoridades a que lleven ante la justicia a los responsables del crimen. Gonzalo Marroquín, presidente de la Comisión de Libertad de Prensa e Información de la SIP, pidió a las autoridades "una investigación rápida y efectiva para castigar a los responsables".

HamFest2008: cartografia italiana per l'APRS Kenwood

Ho appena ricevuto questo comunicato stampa sulla cartografia elettronica abbinat all'APRS: è raro che una agenzia di pubbliche relazioni si occupi di prodotti radioamatoriali, ma il marchio Kenwood lo giustifica, tanto più se la cartografia viene da una azienda italiana come AvMap. Notate l'occhiello che definisce i radioamatori come "categoria di appassionati riconosciuta dallo Stato italiano come bene prezioso". Un po' come il mufflone o il formaggio di fossa, insomma. Ma dovete considerare che il comunicato finisce sul tavolo di redattori che dell'hobby della radio non sanno nulla e che non sospettano neppure che l'APRS è una applicazione ben più antica della moderna "vague" della geolocalizzazione e della car navigation. Ancora una volta i radioamatori si dimostrano bravi e misconosciuti pionieri.
Approfitto anche per dare la non notizia - ormai lo sanno tutti - della fiera di Firedrichshafen, sul lago di Costanza. La HamFest è il più importante evento di settore in Europa e avrà una nutrita presenza di espositori e visitatori italiani. Forte come sempre la rappresentanza della "industria" nazionale del SDR. Il tutto si svolge dal 27 al 29 giugno, chissà mai che anch'io non riesca a farci un salto...

Carrara, 24 giugno 2008 – AvMap, unico player italiano conosciuto a livello mondiale nel mercato della navigazione satellitare, annuncia che sarà presente assieme a Kenwood a Friedrichshafen in Germania dal 27 al 29 giugno 2008 in occasione dell’Ham Radio 2008, meeting internazionale tra i più importanti al mondo dedicato ai radioamatori, categoria di appassionati che l’Italia, primo paese nel mondo a farlo, ha riconosciuto come bene prezioso per lo sviluppo culturale della nazione e valido strumento di aiuto in ambito civile. In questa occasione AvMap avrà l’occasione di presentare il Geosat 5 con il software creato ad hoc per la radio Kenwood TM-D710E.
Questa promozione segue la partnership tra AvMap e Kenwood in Nord America, dove il kit TM-D710A (versione americana del TM-D710E) e Geosat 5 è divenuta la soluzione APRS per eccellenza. L’APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System) è un sistema basato sulla trasmissione di segnali digitali tramite le radio e usato dai radioamatori per controllare, attraverso la visualizzazione grafica sullo schermo a colori del Geosat 5, la posizione istante per istante di una stazione radio in movimento.
Questo sistema può essere particolarmente prezioso in ambito civile grazie alla possibilità di monitorare costantemente la posizione delle ambulanze rispetto agli ospedali più vicini o dei mezzi mobili della protezione civile.

La partnership tra Kenwood e AvMap parte nel 2004 grazie alla compatibilità tra il navigatore Geosat 2 e la radio TM-D700A/E e TH-DA/E. Visto il successo della soluzione APRS, AvMap mette a disposizione il Geosat 4 nel 2005 fino ad arrivare al nuovo Geosat 5, unico sistema GPS dotato di software apposito per le funzioni delle radio Kenwood TM-D710A/E (compatibile anche con i modelli Kenwood delle precedenti generazioni TD-H7 A/E e TD-M700 A/E).

Il software di Geosat 5 presenta l’opzione ‘intercetta l’obiettivo’ particolarmente utile per operazioni di soccorso: infatti il navigatore può essere impostato per navigare in direzione di un contatto APRS in movimento, cosi da ricalcolare automaticamente quando una nuova posizione è riportata.
La modalità tactical permette di selezionare un contatto APRS in movimento per controllare oltre al call sign e alla posizione, anche la sua velocità, direzione e altitudine.
Il navigatore APRS ready sarà disponibile in due versioni: Geosat 5 e Geosat 5 Blu (con bluetooth) entrambe con mappe regionali o Europee. Informazioni su AvMap
AvMap nasce in Italia nel 1994 all’interno del gruppo C-MAP, leader mondiale nella tecnologia di cartografia elettronica. UniSiena grazia FdF per altri sei mesi

Francesco mi ha appena avvertito che Facoltà di Frequenza, la radio dell'ateneo senese, continuerà per il momento a trasmettere. Il contratto con Radio Cecina ha avuto una proroga di sei mesi. Non so se l'ingresso ufficiale di FdF nella galassia di precariato che è il nostro sistema scolastico dagli asili nido al post dottorato sia una notizia così confortante, ma almeno questa radio universitaria sopravvive ancora per un po'.
Da quello che si può leggere su questo blog sul bilancio degli ultimi cinque anni di UniSiena, con tutta probabilità a chiudere i battenti sarà per prima l'istituzione nel suo complesso...

AIS, la Cina adotta la tecnologia di ship tracking

Il costruttore britannico SRT Marine, del gruppo Software Radio Technology ha ricevuto una importante commessa dalla Cina per l'acquisto di migliaia di moduli AIS, Automatic Identification System, un sistema di tracking che consente alle navi di trasmettere e ricevere informazioni in tempo reale sulla loro posizione in avvicinamento ai porti e a mappare questa posizione in cartografia digitale. Come sempre i cinesi fanno le cose in grande e sembra che entro il 2011 tutti i bastimenti in navigazione interna (duecentomila natanti!) dovranno essere equipaggiati con apparati AIS. La commessa SRT vale un milione di dollari e forse potrà dare una mano al titolo della società, oggi ai minimi storici.

SRT is pleased to announce that its wholly owned subsidiary, SRT Marine Technology Limited, has received an order for its AIS Class B OEM product worth US$1 million from TCB in China.
AIS is being used by China government agencies to improve safety and security on inland waterways and near coastal regions. It is estimated that China has over 200,000 locally registered vessels who may be required to fit AIS by 2011.

China has become one of the leaders in this respect. Come funziona AIS? IN pratica è un super radar attivo che utilizza due canali VHF, la AIS 1 su 161.975 MHz e la AIS 2 162.025 MHz. Obbligatorio dal 2002 sulle navi passeggeri e sui mercantili oltre le 300 tonnellate, ormai esiste anche una Class B di transponder a basso costo per le imbarcazioni più leggere e da diporto. Inoltre sul mercato per poche decine o centinaia di euro è ormai possibile acquistare apparati solo riceventi (per esempio questo Dolphin Maritime o il NASA AIS Engine o il WeatherDock AG), che permettono di rendersi conto del traffico navale senza comunicare la propria posizione. Su Internet cominciano a essere disponibili dei gateway che visualizzano in tempo reale le mappe AIS di diversi porti e la posizione di migliaia di navi. What is AIS?

AIS is the mariner’s most significant development in navigation safety since the introduction of radar. The system was originally developed as a collision avoidance tool to enable commercial vessels to ‘see’ each other more clearly in all conditions and improve the helmsman’s information about his surrounding environment. AIS does this by continuously transmitting a vessels identity, position, speed and course, along with other relevant information to all other AIS equipped vessels within range. Combined with a shore station, this system also offers port authorities and maritime safety bodies the ability to manage maritime traffic and reduce the hazards of marine navigation.
Due to the great safety benefits offered by AIS, this technology was made compulsory throughout the world in 2002 for all passenger ferries and vessels over 300 gross tonnes. An AIS transponder determines its own position, speed and course using a built in GPS receiver. This information is combined with other important navigation information and automatically communicated between AIS equipped vessels without any user interaction.
AIS transponders on other vessels and coast stations receive this information and use it to build up a live graphical display of traffic in the area. The transponder can be connected to many types of chart plotter or PC charting software using a standard interface protocol. AIS does not require a radar, but can offer similar capabilities and even enhance a radar image if a radar has already been fitted to the vessel.
The range of coverage of the system is similar to a VHF radio. The system also has the advantage that VHF radio signals will travel around bends and over islands giving better coverage than radar or enhancing a radar picture when used together.

A Class B transponder continuously receives information form all Class A and Class B equipped vessels around you and displays this information on your standard chart plotter or PC. At the same time, your Class B will transmit your position to all AIS equipped vessels automatically.
Safety at night and in poor weather conditions
The Class B AIS is a vital navigation tool in poor visibility conditions. The information received from other AIS ‘targets’ provides the user with vital navigation information and the position transmission alerts other vessels to the user’s location.
Combined with radar, AIS gives you the best possible picture of your situation in all conditions.
Position transmission to authorities / nearby vessels in case of emergency.
Graphically view your position in relation to other vessels when connected to suitable display.
Track vessels of interest such as friends/ colleagues.

AIS Classes explained

Two types of AIS transponder are available: Class A and Class B. Despite the huge safety benefits of commercial (Class A) AIS, the cost of this advanced technology has previously been a barrier to introducing AIS to leisure craft and light commercial vessels. To overcome this problem the Class B AIS transponder has been developed to provide all the benefits of AIS in a cost effective, reliable and user-friendly product for users that do not need the comprehensive data required for commercial shipping.
The Class B product has been designed with the light commercial and leisure user’s budget in mind, yet still offers all the advantages of AIS. The device can be easily installed and connected to most chart plotters or PC based navigation software.
AIS receivers are also available; these units will pick up broadcasts from both Class A and Class B AIS transponders but do not transmit their own position. A receiver allows you to see the position of other vessels, however your position will not be visible to them.

Intercettazioni NSA, liberatoria generale dal Parlamento USA

Le misure antiterrorismo e il "problema sicurezza" sono ovunque una formidabile arma elettorale. Ma è curioso osservare i diversi modi in cui le diverse amministrazioni - soprattutto di destra - interpretano l'applicazione degli strumenti a disposizione, intercettazioni incluse. Il caso della Svezia e della sua politica di intercettazione selvaggia l'ha fatto emergere in questi giorni Newsline con i suoi puntuali interventi, ma negli Stati Uniti la Camera (e ora si appresta a farlo il Senato) ha approvato una bozza di emendamento alla Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act che rappresenterebbe un condono tombale per tutte le Telco che nel 2006 hanno risposto come tanti soldatini (Qwest è stata l'unica a rifiutarsi e ora rischia di passare per antipatriottica) all'ordine della National Security Agency: spiare senza mandato della magistratura le comunicazioni di milioni di americani, presumibilmente innocenti e del tutto ignari, in modo da poter stilare il "profilo" dei potenziali terroristi.
Consiglio la lettura del commento di Robert Cringely su Infoworld. Quando si tratta di salvaguardare la sicurezza dei propri concittadini, evidentemente l'amico Dabliu non la pensa esattamente come l'amico Seelvio. E probabilmente l'amico Seelvio piacerebbe a Cringely. Che paradossi, eh?

Uncle Spy Wants You

Last week the House of Representatives passed a "compromise" amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, though it sounds like the only things that have been compromised are our Constitutional rights. Now the Senate is poised to do the same.
Unfortunately, the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 adds little to existing FISA laws save for one very big thing: immunity for telecoms that violated FISA laws on orders from the White House. Essentially, all Ma Bell and her bastard offspring need to do is present a note that says Uncle Sam made them do it, and the 40-odd lawsuits pending against them vanish.
This rewards companies like AT&T and Verizon that failed to stand up to orders of questionable legality, while punishing companies like Qwest who declined the government's requests. Imagine the cojones it took to say no to the NSA. What are the odds anyone's likely to do that again?
Remember, three Bush appointees -- attorney general John Ashcroft, deputy AG James Comey, and FBI head Robert Mueller -- threatened to resign over this program. So this is clearly not a matter of the NSA forgetting to pick up a few subpoenas on the way home from the grocery store. This was something no one had seen before.
But what exactly was it? The worst thing about the immunity provision is that it closes the door on discovery. We will likely never find out what information the NSA sought, what it found, and what that data was used for. That's a problem.
It's very likely the spooks were involved in a massive data mining operation that involved data from millions of innocent non-terrorist law-abiding Americans. Think I'm being paranoid? Here's what USA Today revealed in May 2006:

The National Security Agency has been secretly collecting the phone call records of tens of millions of Americans, using data provided by AT&T, Verizon and BellSouth, people with direct knowledge of the arrangement told USA TODAY.
The NSA program reaches into homes and businesses across the nation by amassing information about the calls of ordinary Americans — most of whom aren't suspected of any crime. This program does not involve the NSA listening to or recording conversations. But the spy agency is using the data to analyze calling patterns in an effort to detect terrorist activity, sources said in separate interviews.

In other words, they're attempting to create a profile of terrorists, and the only way to do that is to profile a whole lot of non terrorists. And if they happen to catch anyone doing anything else borderline illegal along the way, they can pick and choose whom they want to prosecute. Why should China and Russia have all the fun?
I'm all for hunting down and ferreting out the bad guys, but I draw the line at spying on ordinary Americans. I'm happy to stand in line at the airport or the baseball stadium and have them look through my bags, even though I know it's mostly Security Theater. My phone calls, emails, and Web surfing are another story. If I'm a suspect and you've got a warrant, fine, spy on me. Otherwise, I'd like to be left alone. Is that unreasonable?
