HAARP, il cospirazionismo non demorde: fonti scettiche

Ogni minimo inghippo negli archivi online degli esperimenti di HAARP diventa un invito a nozze per i cospirazionisti di Internet. HAARP, High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, per chi non la sapesse, è un programma di ricerca finanziato dal DARPA, dai militari USA e dall'Università dell'Alaska che ha come finalità lo studio della ionosfera e la possibilità di modificarne attivamente le condizioni (tramite la trasmissione di fasci di onde radio) per applicazioni come le radiotelecomunicazioni e la sorveglianza. L'impianto che è al centro di questo esperimento è una ionosonda un po' particolare localizzata a Gakona, in Alaska, un potente array per la trasmissione HF costituito da una griglia di 180 antenne. Il sito canadese PRESS Core - rivista online che sostiene di pubblicare "ciò che altri non pubblicano: la verità" - riporta un articolo, aggiornato al 21 aprile, dove si afferma che il sito Web di HAARP è stato volutamente chiuso su ordine del governo americano perché conteneva le prove "inoppugnabili" del ruolo dell'impianto di Gakona nella "produzione" del sisma con conseguente tsunami che ha messo il Giappone in ginocchio.

It was ordered taken down by the US government to conceal US weather modification and earthquake inducing warfare activities against foreign states. The HAARP website was publishing very damaging evidence of US military weather modification and earthquake triggering operations against foreign states. The magnetometer presented concrete evidence that HAARP triggered the Japan earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

A parte l'assurdità di una teoria che vede le origini di un fenomeno dal bilancio energetico enorme nella trasmissione di un impianto da 3,6 megaWatt complessivi (che secondo Wikipedia genera alla quote della ionosfera un campo da 3 µW/cm², migliaia di volte meno rispetto a quello generato dalla radiazione solare), resta sempre il mistero più inspiegabile: perché HAARP metterebbe a disposizione i suoi dati 24 ore su 24 interrompendo la pubblicazione PROPRIO mentre sono in pieno svolgimento le sue losche e distruttive attività? Non sarebbe più logico entrare in piena clandestinità e non pubblicare più niente, o pubblicare dati fasulli?

L'affermazione ancora più risibile riguarda la presunta "pressione internazionale" che avrebbe indotto le autorità a riaprire l'archivio:

Perché tutto questo dispiegamento di informazioni e dettagli, se dietro la facciata della ricerca scientifica si nasconde in realtà una Spectre di terroristi ambientali che passano il loro tempo a scatenare disastri da migliaia di vittime a botta? Ironia vuole, tra l'altro, che i grafici del magnetometro a induzione citati da PRESS Core vengono prodotti con una strumentazione messa a punto dall'Università di Tokyo…

Il capofila delle teorie complottiste che circondano l'HAARP si chiama Nick Begich Jr. figlio dell'omonimo uomo politico di origine croata che scomparve tragicamente in un incidente aereo nei cieli dell'Alaska. Il Cessna 310 che trasportava Nick Begich Sr. precipitò e non fu mai ritrovato: il fatto destò una grande impressione e spinse le autorità ad approvare una legislazione che impose l'installazione dei radiosegnalatori di emergenza in tutti i velivoli civili. Il figlio Nick è un noto attivista e i suoi due siti Web:

propongono una fantasmagoria di complotti tutti centrati sul "controllo a distanza" (della ionosfera, del clima, dell'attività sismica, persino dei nostri cervelli) da parte di oscure forze governative. Uno tsunami di dati e correlazioni strampalate che contribuisce a creare una visione paranoica di una realtà molto complessa in cui è obiettivamente difficile resistere a certe semplificazioni.

Trovate un bel ritratto di Nick Begich Jr sul blog di due filosofi "sperimentali", Ryan Lake (autore di una curiosa striscia da fumetti filosofica, ChaosPet) e Fredrik Haraldsen: Encyclopedia of American Loons. L'Enciclopedia dei mattocchi americani è uno straordinario repertorio di predicatori, pseudoscienziati, cospirazionisti che per una strana combinazione popolano il territorio degli Stati Uniti. Un fenomeno tutto americano, come i serial killer.

La lettura di American Loons mi ha spinto a raccogliere un po' di link a risorse di informazione scientifica di matrice direttamente o indirettamente scettica. Ne è venuta fuori una raccolta un po' rapsodica, che sottopongo così com'è alla vostra attenzione. Per fortuna sul Web per ogni mattocchio pseudoscientifico esiste una fonte compilata da uno scienziato impegnato a disinnescare la bomba a orologeria delle teorie dei complotti.

Ionosfera e terremoti: teorie cospirazioniste su Haïti

I cospirazionisti americani del programma radiofonico The Power Hour - diffuso tra l'altro sulle onde corte da WWCR - sono convinti che quello di Haïti non sia un "vero" terremoto. O meglio sono praticamente certi (ma del resto guardando su YouTube i cospirazionisti - e molto spesso neonazisti - americani sono del tutto certi che Barack Obama e Osama bin Laden siano la stessa persona) che il terremoto non sia naturale bensì artificiale. L'arma utilizzata per scatenare il sisma del settimo grado che ha devastato Port-au-Prince si troverebbe nella lontana Alaska e sarebbe il famigerato impianto dell'HAARP, la struttura della Difesa USA che studia i fenomeni ionosferici e come indurre nella stessa ionosfera variazioni che possano servire per particolari applicazioni nel campo delle telecomunicazioni.
La "prova" del coinvolgimento dell'HAARP si troverebbe direttamente sul sito Web del laboratorio e precisamente nell'archivio che raccoglie gli spettrogrammi rilevati ogni giorno nella porzione compresa tra 1 e 30 MHz. Lo spettrogramma dell'11 gennaio, tre giorni prima del sisma di Haiti, mostra un "sospetto" buco di due ore, tra l'1 e le 3 di notte. Secondo The Power Hour questo vuoto dimostra che in quelle ore l'HAARP stava sparando fasci di radiofrequenza nella ionosfera per scatenare il terremoto di Haïti attraverso un meccanismo "piezoelettrico inverso". In pratica la ionosfera sarebbe stata caricata elettricamente per far spostare le zolle tettoniche nel sottosuolo di Hispaniola. L'effetto viene chiamato piezoelettrico inverso perché è specularmente opposto a quello della carica elettrica generata dallo spostamento meccanico di due lamine di cristallo in un accendigas. E' stato ipotizzato che il fanomeno dei precursori in radiofrequenza dei terremoti derivino proprio da questo, dai segnali radio associati alle scariche generate dalla terra che si muove. L'effetto inverso non mi sembra altrettanto facile da spiegare e soprattutto da controllare fino al punto di rendere possibile l'impiego di campi elettromagnetici "sparati" verso la ionosfera come cannoni ad alta precisione. Ma basta guardare su Internet, deposito di ogni sorta di teoria strampalata, per sapere che anche lo tsunami asiatico di cinque anni fa era stato provocato dagli americani nello stesso modo. Scusatemi, non ero aggiornato.
Quale che sia il vostro parere sul sito di The Power Hour trovate abbondandi "dimostrazioni", inclusi i link agli archivi sotto accusa. In particolare questo (selezionare la data dell'11 gennaio). La lista di riferimenti fa una certa impressione ma i documenti parlano semmai di come le perturbazioni possano servire per spiegare fenomeni al suolo, non viceversa.

A very unusual deletion can be observed in the archived data of HAARP instrument readings from the day before the Haiti earthquake. Perhaps it is a matter of time until it will get fixed with a simple copy-paste operation, but I have made screen shots of it). Set the date in "Chart Archives" below the today's graph to 2001/Jan/11 in the window below the graph and see for yourselves. It is the only instance of such an occurrence I have discovered by looking through other historical dates. Perhaps some other deletions have already been fixed, I can think of date like May 12th 2008 or December 26th 2004.

Come ti manipolo la ionosfera. E perché

Tra le varie madri di tutte le teorie dei complotti, l'installazione che i militari americani hanno costruito in Alsaka, a poca distanza da Anchorage, per lo studio della ionosfera, è uno dei presunti malefici più gettonati. L'impianto è quello raffigurato solo parzialmente nella fotografia satellitare di Google: guardacaso si trova proprio al limitare di un'area esplorata a bassa risoluzione. La facility, chiamata HAARP (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program), è costituita da un array di 12x15 dipoli incrociati alimentati da altrettanti trasmettitori ed è giocoforza avvolta da un alone di mistero. Fondamentalmente si tratta solo di un tipo molto particolare di ionosonda unita a dispositivi in grado di attivare la ionosfera sovrastante all'impianto e di sperimentare varie tecniche di modulazione, cioè di trasmissione di contenuto informativo, della stessa. Un altro obiettivo è lo studio di tecniche di rilevamento remoto e radar in HF "over the orizon", basate appunto sulla ionosfera come mezzo per la diffusione su larghissima scala di segnali radar in grado di individuare oggetti a distanze assai superiori ai sistemi convenzionali. Da qui a immaginare che i trasmettitori di HAARP servono per condizionare i cervelli di tutto il pianeta, ci vuole tutta la paranoica fantasia di chi deve per forza leggere in una scia di condensa l'inconfondibile "segno" di una mostruosa cospirazione guidata da spietate forze governative, militari, finanziarie o magari extraterrestri.

L'altro giorno - ho trovato la segnalazione su DX Listening Digest - l'autorevole rivista Wired ha raccontato che grazie alla legge americana sul disclosure forzato di documenti secretati (FOIA, Freedom of information act), è saltato fuori un documento molto dettagliato sulle attività di HAARP. Tutto bene, allora? La rivista ha fatto piazza pulita di certe fanfaluche? Per niente. Il taglio scelto dall'autore del pezzo lascia al contrario molto spazio all'incertezza e all'idea che sì dietro HAARP si nasconde un'arma potenzialmente offensiva. Interpretando in modo del tutto errato le cose che sappiamo sulla propagazione ionosferica - o semplicemente ignorandole - Wired sostiene a un certo punto che siccome la ionosfera è un elemento vitale per la propagazione dei segnali VHF/UHF, HAARP potrebbe un giorno agire come un grande "interruttore" impedendo la diffusione delle trasmissioni radiotelevisive. In realtà il documento parla di tecniche (anche transionosferiche, cioè riferibili a percorsi propagativi terra-satellite) che teoricamente potrebbero potenziare le comunicazioni, stabilendo nuovi tracciati terra-ionosfera-terra e terra-satellite attraverso il cosiddette field aligned scattering (dispersione ad allineamento di campi). Le comunicazioni VHF-UHF terrestri sono in genere a portata ottica o al massimo troposferica, quindi nulla che agisca sulla sola ionosfera potrebbe impedire tali trasmissioni. Quanto alle connessioni satellitari, il dubbio che oltre a favorire il formarsi di nuovi tracciati transionosferici HAARP possa servire per modificare o annullare quelli esistenti, a me non sembra troppo motivato, anche se potrei sbagliarmi. Non voglio dire che ai militari un'arma del genere non interesserebbe, semplicemente che mi pare più plausibile un progetto mirato a rafforzare le capacità trasmissive proprie piuttosto che inibire quelle altrui. Mi sembra molto più realistica, su Wired, la descrizione di una applicazione come il riscaldamento della ionosfera nello spettro ottico degli infrarossi. Questo effetto potrebbe essere sfruttato per schermare l'area allo sguardo di un satellite IR avversario, che in questo modo non potrebbe più "vedere" le tracce dei missili balistici eventualmente lanciati. Un'azione di disturbo plausibile, anche se come per tutte le azioni di disturbo va considerata anche la possibilità che utilizzandola si finisca per ridurre anche le proprie capacità di difesa o attacco.
Uno degli aspetti più affascinanti della sperimentazione HAARP, descritto nella pubblicazione desecretata grazie al FOIA, rimane quello della modulazione della ionosfera alle frequenze ELF. L'idea è quella di trasformare la cavità ionosfera-terra che avvolge il pianeta in un unico sistema risonante che consentirebbe di trasmettere ai sottomarini informazioni su scala globale. E' possibile infine che tutti questi esperimenti abbiano conseguenze ambientali negative, o finiscano per avere un impatto distruttivo sulla ionosfera stessa? Non ne ho francamente idea, ma immagino che dal punto di vista energetico il sistema ionosfera-sole abbia un bilancio complessivo assai più consistente rispetto alle sollecitazioni provocate dal basso dai 360 trasmettitori da 10 kW di HAARP. Sugli effetti chimici (che però non devono essere messi in relazione solo con il progetto HAARP) è ancora più difficile pronunciarsi, almeno per me.

New Document Reveals Military Mystery's Powers

For years, no military program has sparked more fevered speculation from conspiracy theorists than the mysterious High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program, or HAARP. And for years, the Pentagon has been pooh-poohing speculation that the enormous collection of transmitters, radars, and magnetometers in Alaska was some sort of superweapon.
But, it turns out, the conspiracy theorists may not have been entirely off-base, after all.
Since its inception, there's been a huge range of opinion on what HAARP actually does: everything from a giant mind control facility to a space nuke countermeasure to a weather controller to an ionosphere-boiling mad science experiment to the mother of all pork projects has been suggested. But now that the program is actually up an running, military managers say the electronics array has much more benign use. "HAARP's main job is to produce radio waves to probe the ionosphere," an Air Force Research Laboratory officer said in October.
Which is true -- up to a point.
A drive by Clifford Stone on the X-Files-esque uber-site to use the Freedom of Information Act to turn up UFO-related documents has led to the release of a fascinating report, HAARP: Research and Applications. It's from the Air Force Research Laboratory and Office of Naval Research, and it lays out the uses the military see for HAARP. Turns out the Pentagon wants some military bang for their buck from the program.
HAARP can actually perform a lot of militarily important functions, all involving the interactions of radio waves with the high atmosphere, magnetosphere and ionosphere. The document points out that "on the higher frequency end (VHF/UHF) transionospheric propagation is a ubiquitous element of numerous civilian and military communication systems, surveillance and remote sensing systems." In other words, messing with the ionosphere means you can shut down VHF radio, TV and radar signals at will. As radio hams know, the reflection and refraction effects of the ionosphere make a and HAARP provides the only means of influencing that.
Another interesting feature is how HAARP can influence the 'auroral electrodynamic circuit', a natural flow of electricity with ranges from 100,000 to 1 million megawatts ("equivalent to 10 to 100 large power plants"). Messing with the electrical properties of the ionosphere means some of this tremendous flow of power can be changed at the flick of a switch. In effect, the natural flow can be modulated to create a gigantic low-frequency radio transmitter.
Which is extremely interesting to military types. Extremely low frequency, or ELF, waves can be used for submarine communications and for probing the planet; because of the way they propagate, HAARP can cover "a significant fraction of the Earth." The document says that the waves can be used for "seabed exploration" and even locating mines underwater, not to mention "underground target detection."
HAARP can also "induce precipitation of energetic particles" in the ionosphere, which "could impact the operation and lifespan of satellites." While this is mainly about protecting satellites from particles from solar flares or nuclear explosions, the phrasing suggests that it might be able to have a subtle negative impact on satellites as well.
At the High Frequency range, HAARP also has some useful tricks, including being able to "enhance ground-to-ground and satellite-to-ground links that would otherwise be marginal or absent." Its ability to create a radio-reflective layer means it can create new over-the-horizon capabilities for radio and radar systems. It can even act as a HF radar emitter itself.
The third band is optical and near-optical: HAARP can make lights in the sky. While we have looked at the effect of creating high-altitude plasmas before (as possible anti-missile defence), the document notes that it can also produce "airglow with megawatt power…in the IR [infrared] region of the spectrum." This has "significant military implications for IR detection and countermeasures." The picture with this shows the IR glow below a satellite, suggesting that the system may be able to blank out the view of IR satellites selectively. Given that such satellites are the best way of detecting the launch of ICBMs, this is a significant capability.
All in all, it's a set-up that can do a lot more than just basic research. And while this may not seem much compared to weather modification, remember that these are just the capabilities they're willing to make public...
